About Monkey Side Bars

Monkey Side Bars is a twice-a-week drawing game where you are challenged to a piece of art on a specific theme. Players take turns selecting the theme for each round. On the reveal date for each round, we co-ordinate a mass posting to Instagram simultaneously across the globe (see posting times and collages). Be sure to check your posting time. The game is open to all who wish to participate. We welcome all levels of skill from beginners to hobbyists to professionals. All you need is a creative mind, a sense of humor, and a willingness to try. You might have heard it through the ape vine… This game will have you hooked on the monkey bars. Like a monkey likes a banana… it has that appeal. Come monkey around with us and see what all the fuss is about.

Autism Awareness compo
Art by Moni aka @moniljs (IG)

“There is nothing more inspiring and moving than art”
~ Moni

An excellent compo invite has been added in Sketch Club by a fantastic artist and monkey member – Moni AKA @moniljs – Even if you are not using Sketch Club as your medium, please feel free to post a drawing to Instagram as we are certain everyone, including Moni, would appreciate seeing your art with regards to raising awareness.
If you would like to tag #MSBAutismAwareness for your drawing then it might help us to see your drawing in one place for any Sketch Club or non-Sketch Club participants.
Here are the compo details as they appear in Sketch Club:

  • Artwork must be original, not a piece already existing by another artist.
  • No image loads, make it all yourself in Sketch Club!
  • Multiple entries per artist are allowed
  • Have fun!

[Please see SC for any further details relating to this compo]

World Autism Awareness Day
is observed on 2 April every year since 2008. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution “62/139. World Autism Awareness Day”; adopted on 18 December 2007, it was proposed by Qatar, and supported by all member states.  The resolution had four main components:

  • the establishment of 2 April as WAAD
  • participation of UN organizations, member states, NGOs and all private & public organizations in WAAD
  • raise awareness of autism on all levels in society
  • to ask the UN Secretary-General to deliver this message to member states and all other UN organs.

Autism Ontario celebrates World Autism Awareness Day by “Raising a Flag” for autism. Municipalities around Ontario raise a flag to raise awareness for autism in their region.

In 2014 WAAD coincided with Onesie Wednesday, a day created by the National Autistic Society to encourage people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to show their support for anyone on the autistic spectrum. By wearing a onesie or pyjamas, participants are saying….

“it’s all right to be different”

This is an excellent post by artist Suhita Shirodkar, a beginner’s watercolour lesson for her daughter Kavya. The results are astonishing, it makes us stop and think how we look at things when we draw.

We at MonkeySideBars are more than happy for our members to be creative and we hope the artists are aware that posts to the game can be drawn or created using any medium.

Take a look through this post and you will also see a link about a lesson on how to draw people.

Monkey on 🙂

Sketch Away: Travels with my sketchbook

My daughter Kavya and I sometimes sketch together. Most often that means we sit next to each other and draw. But this weekend I thought I’d do a little ‘lesson’ with her and talk her through how I look at things when I draw.

I simplified what I look for and think of as I paint, but essentially this is how I work . I wanted her to work from observation, not just copy what I painted. So we made a simple setup. I made notes of what I told her as we drew and painted. Here is what I recorded of her painting (all the images except the last one are her work) and what I remember telling her. I thought I’d share it: a beginner’s lesson in drawing and painting from direct observation.

Here is our setup. Simple enough. 2 pears in contrasting colors. ( Don’t have pears? Use anything simple-shaped without too much surface decoration.)

The trickiest…

13 Sci-Fi Poster

A long time ago,
in a galaxy far far a Stray…
Is Science-Fiction (again)
Chosen by Stray

Back in November 2013, Monkey Stray, who is now an Admin at MSB, selected the word(s) Science Fiction:

…and now – by popular demand its back
for a double feature 😀

DJ – Competition – Results

Results are in, from MonkeySideBars Round #144 – DJ Competition.
This contest, judged by our very own sponsors at Caseen,
say a few words about each winner and participant of this round:

The DJ Insists, that you throw your hands in the air and pump some fists,
Dancing beats fill the room as the DJ plays the next tune 🙂

Caseen says:
“Hello my name is Brandon Sugano, and I am one of the marketing
managers here at caseen HQ working with MSB for many months now.
We are a proud sponsor, and even more proud to have been chosen to judge the round “DJ”  I had a very difficult time choosing from among all the
talented entries, but I think we have come down to a decision.
All of your works depicted unique and amazing ways
to interpret the word “DJ”.

WINNER – 1ST PLACE – Goes to Monkey Member MaryJayne

MaryJayne - 1st Place

Caseen says: Congratulations @maryjane530 you are the winner of this round!
Your work depicted an abstract DJ with roots for hands and an afro for tree leaves.
It is a very unique and beautiful work.

2ND PLACE- Goes to Monkey Member @Rosenfeld2

Rosenfeld2 - 2nd Place

Caseen says: This was also beautiful, and I love the abstraction of an equalizer to a DJ.
Very well done! The dark black background and neons perfectly depict a DJ with an
exciting tone.

3RD place- Goes to Monkey Member Rachy

Rachy Suzanne - 3rd Place

Caseen says:  @rachysuzanne – Your work depicted a beautiful scene with abstract shapes and a very well done DJ.

Embaressed to say (coz I’m writing this!) that an Honorable Mention goes to:
Tabitha Raincloud AKA @newjupiter

Tabby Raincloud - HM

Caseen says: newjupiter who depicts the “iPad DJ”. It definitely depicts the young DJs of today who use tablets and technology to DJ to audiences. The iPad case is a common type and is perfectly drawn and well detailed. The shading and coloring is really good.
Keep up the great work!

Caseen also says:  “Again all contest entries were great, and proved for a very hard round of judging! Thank you MSB for the opportunity to host and judge this round!”

Please peruse below ALL entries for this round:

Much appreciation goes to Caseen for supporting and sponsoring our community from almost the very
beginning.  Judging from our feedback at MSB, we know that Monkey Members enjoy Caseen products…

Thanks over and over Caseen and all Monkey Members for making this such a fun community.

Monkey on 🙂

Hello there monkey people monkeys…
We are now well into the NY – No, not New York but the New Year.

Come join in the monkey madness
with a bunch of friendly monkey artists.

Building Robots

Who wouldn’t want their own robot, with at least one blinking light?
As a monkey, I am personally waiting for the time when revolution is right. But for now we can construct our own robots and perhaps one day rule the earth 😀
If you happen to ever be in sunny London and would like to build your own robot then be sure to stop by here:
If you can make it to Drink Shop Do as soon as January 2015, then do join them for Lego Robot on Wednesday Jan 14:
Sit back with a hot beverage for a short clip from ArtRage which I think you will all enjoy:
For round #138 of MonkeySideBars, Monkey Members also built their own robots and posted them to Instagram, which can be viewed at your leisure

DJ – Competition

Round #144 at MonkeySideBars
is also a competition round for all Monkey Members.
Play it in the usual way – all drawings must be new 🙂
Competition ends: Saturday December 27th

DJ, or Disc Jockey is the theme, please do not confuse with an actual jockey unless of course they are mixing music atop a horse. So many images come to mind, and oddly enough I can picture each word with it’s own strobe and beat.
We have vinyl, turntables, and headphones, some hip hop, rap, or techno, for a smashing party, rave, or dance, all engineered by the talented disc jockey (deejay).  They are known for their mixing and scratching as they blend hits combining artists and keeping the dance floor alive.  The tracks fade in and out, all controlled by the pulse of the DJ.

It’s time to celebrate my monkeys, so put on something festive,
and don’t forget to tip your Disc Jockey!

 “Music gives us soul
To the universe,
Wings to the mind,
Flight to the imagination
And life to everything.”
– in my creations/tumblr

Our sponsor friends at Caseen
will be judging this compeition for us,
of their chosen word DJ
Caseen will be giving away some fantastic stylus prizes below:
1st Place: 2X caseen VIBE L in Pink and Black
2nd Place: 1X caseen VIBE in Black
3rd Place: 1X caseen CLASSIC Stylus in Silver

Disc Jockey (DJ): Do we all think that DJ’s mix music up to make it sound good?

Good luck to all members participating in this round 😀

Monkey Fight

As monkey members prepare to fight this weekend with the ‘word up’ to draw being FIGHTER – let’s all get into the life-force of boxing perhaps, or whatever fightie thing you’re into. I personally, just bought a fighter plane… they let me keep the hanger 🙂
